The mechanism comprises a housing (3) holding an axially moving pneumatically driven head (1) with a cylindrical extension at its lower side guided into a matching bore at a cylindrical part (2) accommodated inside a helical spring (51) and provided with a pin (21) with an inclined lower surface (22) protruding off center from the lower side. When the head (1) is axially moved the lower end (22) of the pin (21) is pushed repeatedly against a rotating element (4) with a toothed upper surface (42), each of its recesses matching the shape of the tip (22) of the pin . The linear motion of the pneumatically driven head (1) results in a rotary motion of the tool holding element (4).
