<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make rich a target emission air-fuel ratio by preventing smoke from being deteriorated based on the state of an emission purification catalyst (NOx catalyst, DPF) when the rise of the temperature of emission or the rich operation of less than stoichiometry is requested. <P>SOLUTION: A combustion is switched from a normal operating condition (lean operation state) to a condition where preliminary combustion and main combustion are controlled. In the control of the preliminary combustion, a fuel is injected before a compression top dead center so that the combustion occurs near the compression top dead center (TDC) (figure a).
