CATHODE RAY TUBE, DISPLAY DEVICE USING IT AND IMAGE DISPLAY METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode ray tube which can shorten an electron gun, realizes a high frequency drive and can give a high resolution image and to provide a display device and an image display method using the cathode ray tube. SOLUTION: The cathode ray tube is constituted by using a field-emission cold cathode 8 consisting of a semiconductor substrate 1, a conical emitter 4 disposed on the semiconductor substrate 1, an insulating layer 3 and an extractor electrode 2. A control electrode 7 is arranged on the electron emission side of the field-emission cold cathode 8. A direct electric source 6 supplying a constant voltage is connected to each of the control electrode 7 and the extractor electrode 2. A modulation electric source 5 capable of modulation of a supply voltage is connected to the emitter 4. By modulating the potential of the emitter 4 with the modulation electric source 5 in the state that the potentials of the control electrode 7 and the extractor electrode 2 are constant, an emission current is controlled and an image is displayed.
