PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute encoder and an angle detecting method capable of detecting accurately an absolute value of a rotation angle of a rotary shaft, using a point light source. SOLUTION: Tracks 8a, 8b for correction are set in a rotary disk 3 of the absolute encoder 1. A slit 7b is arranged between a luminescent element 4 and a photodetecting part 6 all the time irrespective of the rotation angle of the rotary disk 3, in the tracks 8a, 8b for the correction. The absolute encoder 1 provides an incident position (the first incident position 12a) of light passed through the track 8a for the correction, and an incident position (the second incident position 12b) of light passed through the track 8b for the correction, all the time irrespective of the rotation angle of the rotary disk. Corrected incident positions 13a-13i where the light passed through tracks 9a-9i for angle detection get incident are estimated based on the first incident position 12a and the second incident position 12b.
