It is intended to provide novel a compound useful in drugs, in particular, i n drugs for various diseases caused by infection with viruses belonging to the family Herpesviridae, i.e., in preventing or treating infections with variou s herpesviruses, more specifically speaking, chicken pox (varicella) caused by the infection with varicella-zoster virus, herpes zoster caused by recurrent infection with persistent varicella-zoster virus, labial herpes and herpes encephalitis caused by infection with HSV-1, genital herpes caused by infection with HSV-2, etc. An N-{2-[(4-substituted phenyl)amino]-2- oxoethyl}tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-carboxamide derivative having a specific 5- or 6-membered hetroaryl substituent at the 4-position has a favorable antiviral activity and makes it possible to treat the above diseases by oral administration in a small dose.
