PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve heat exchanging performance of a shell and tube type heat exchanger by improving flow of a shell side fluid. SOLUTION: This heat exchanger has the cylindrical shell 1 and a plurality of heat transfer tubes 2 arranged inside the shell, and exchanges heat between the tube side fluid flowing inside the heat transfer tube and a shell side fluid flowing inside the shell provided outside the heat transfer tube. This heat exchanger also has an inlet port 6, which is fitted to the shell and into which the shell side fluid flows, an outlet port 7, which is fitted to the shell at a position separated from the inlet port in the axial direction of the shell and from which the shell side fluid flows out, and a spiral baffle plate 10 arranged inside the shell so that the shell side fluid spirally flows inside the shell from the inlet port to the outlet port.
