1,258,844. Polymerizing silyl carboranes. DOW CORNING CORP. 3 April, 1970 [1 May, 1969], No. 15826/70. Headings C3S and C3T. Siloxane-carborane polymers are prepared by heating neocarborane silanes of the formula in which each R is a C 1-12 alkyl radical, a C 6-8 aryl radical, or a C 3-12 #-perfluoroalkylethyl radical, each R<SP>1</SP> is H or a C 1-6 alkyl radical, and m and n are each 0, 1 or 2, in the presence of sulphuric acid or methane-, ethane-, p-toluene-, perfluoromethane- or tetrafluoroethane - sulphonic acid, to a temperature sufficient to effect condensation. In Examples 1-4, C: C<SP>1</SP>-bis- (hydroxydimethylsilyl (Example 1) or hydroxymethyl - trifluoropropylsilyl (Example 3) or 3 - hydroxy - 1: 1: 3: 3 - tetramethyldisiloxanyl (Example 2) or 3-hydroxy-1: 3-dimethyl- 1:3 - bis - (trifluoropropyl) - disiloxanyl (Example 4))-neocarborane is condensed in the presence of H 2 SO 4 or tetrafluoroethanesulphonic acid. In Examples 5-7, dilithiocarborane is reacted with cyclic [CF 3 CH 2 CH 2 SiMeO] 3 then CF 3 CH 2 CH 2 SiMeCl 2 or with and the products are hydrolysed and condensed using tetrafluoroethanesulphonic acid. |
