1,1-Difluoro-9-oxacyclopenta[b]fluorene or -9-oxacyclohexa-[b]fluorene compounds and their 2,3-dihydro derivatives, with one or two more fluorine substituents at positions 8 and/or 10 and various other substituents at positions 2 and 7 are new. Compounds of formula (I) are new. [Image] R 1>, R 2>(a) H, (b) -M 1>-A 1>-R 5>, (c) 1-16C alkyl or 2-16C alkenyl (optionally with one or more non-adjacent and non-terminal CH 2groups replaced by -O-, -COO-, -OCO-, -OCOO-, -CO- or -Si(CH 3) 2- and/or optionally with one CH 2group replaced by -Ctriple boundC-, cyclopropane-1,2-diyl, cyclobutane-1,3-diyl, 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene and/or optionally with one or more H atoms replaced by F and/or Cl), with the proviso that R 1>and R 2>are not simultaneously H; p, q : 0 or 1, with the proviso that at least one of these is 1; (G 1>-G 2>) : -CH 2CH-, -CH=C-, -CH 2CH 2CH- or -CH=CH-CH-; M 1>-COO-, -OCO-, -CH 2O-, -OCH 2-, -CF 2O-, -OCF 2-, -CH=CH-, -CF=CF-, -Ctriple boundC-, -CH 2CH 2COO-, -OCOCH 2CH 2-, -CH 2CH 2-, -CF 2CF 2-, -(CH 2) 4-, -OCOCF=CF- or a single bond; A 1>1,4-phenylene (optionally with 1 or 2 H atoms replaced by F, Cl, CN and/or OCF 3or with up to 3 H replaced by F), 1,4-cyclohexylene (optionally with 1 or 2 H replaced by CH 3and/or F), 1-cyclohexene-1,4-diyl( optionally with one H replaced by CH 3or F), or 1,3-dioxan-2,5-diyl; R 5>as for R 1>/R 2>, except for -M 1>-A 1>-R 5>.
