New ruthenium complexes containing an o-hydrocarbyloxycarbonylmethoxy-benzylidene ligand, used as catalysts for metathesis reactions, e.g. ring-closure metathesis and cross metathesis reactions

New ruthenium complexes with two anionic ligands, one neutral ligand and a benzylidene ligand, in which the benzylidene ligand is substituted in the ortho position with an alkoxycarbonylmethoxy, cycloalkoxycarbonylmethoxy, aralkoxycarbonylmethoxy or aryloxycarbonylmethoxy group. Compounds of formula (1) are new. [Image] X, X 1>anionic ligands; L : a neutral ligand; R 1>, R 2>1-12C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl, 7-18C aralkyl or aryl, while R 2>may also be H; R 3>H, 1-20C alkyl, 2-20C alkenyl, 2-20C alkynyl or aryl; and a, b, c, d : H, 1-12C alkyl, 1-12C alkoxy, phenyl (optionally substituted with 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy), or nitro. Independent claims are also included for: (1) compounds of formula (2); (2) a method for carrying out metathesis reactions between two compounds (each of which has one olefinic double bond or one of which has two double bonds) using a compound (1) as catalyst; and (3) a method for ring-closure metathesis or cross-metathesis in which a compound with two olefinic double bonds is involved as the substrate and a compound (1) is involved as catalyst.
