An electric cell suitable for use in a miniaturized electronics circuit comprises, in the charged state, an alkali metal anode, a cathode and an electrolyte comprising the halide of the alkali metal. The alkali metal may be lithium and the halide may be lithium iodide. The cathode may be a metal, the electrolyte also comprising a salt of the metal, e.g. silver/silver iodide; silver/silver mercuric iodide, lead/lead chloride, copper/copper chloride. Other cathodes specified are iodine, e.g. a compressed mixture of iodine, carbon and a binder or iodine absorbed on charcoal, or an oxide, or halide of a multivalent metal, e.g. argentic oxide, manganese dioxide, lead oxide, vanadium pentoxide, cerium oxide, ferric halides, mercuric halides, thalium halides, or copper halides. The electrolyte may contain other salts to increase its conductivity, e.g. magnesium iodide. The complete cell may comprise pellets of the active materials sandwiched between terminal plates and coated with P.T.F.E. Specified cells are Li/LiI/AgI/Ag and Li/LiI/I 2 . |
