<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To broaden the range of choice made by a user when an image forming position needs to be corrected, and to allow an image quality priority mode or a speed priority mode to be set in the case where the temperature of the inside of the apparatus exceeds a predetermined control reference temperature. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: image forming units 10Y, 10M, 10C, and 10K which form color images by writing image data Dy, Dm, Dc, and Dk onto respective photoreceptor drums 1Y, 1M, 1C, and 1K; a temperature detecting means 11 which detects the temperature of the inside of the apparatus and outputs data about the detected temperature; and a control means 15 which determines whether color shift needs to be corrected or not based on the data about the detected temperature, and corrects the image forming positions of image writing units 3Y, 3M, 3C, and 3K based on the selection of an automatic color shift correction mode or color shift estimation correction mode.
