<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate accurately performance deterioration of a light-emitting element in an inspection device of a photoelectric system used for detecting a recording medium in a device such as a printer. <P>SOLUTION: In this inspection device, a reflecting member 800 is arranged on a position facing to the light-emitting element 301, and a signal for showing the existence of the reflecting member 800 is outputted corresponding to the light quantity of a light-receiving element 302 for receiving light reflected by the reflecting member 800. The distance L is measured, at which the inspection device detects the reflecting member 800 by bringing the reflecting member 800 close to the direction of the light-emitting element 301 from the position where the reflecting member 800 is not detected.
