PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driver for a flat display to reduce the adverse influence to be caused by the insertion of a black screen particularly in a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The driver which receives an arbitrary gradation data signal for instructing an arbitrary gradation between black and white levels and inserts the screen determined by the arbitrary gradation data signal into the display screen is obtained in the driver for driving the flat display panel. For this purpose, the driver is internally provided with a gradation register for holding the arbitrary gradation data signal and the arbitrary gradation data signal is delivered to the flat display panel under the control of a timing control signal from the gradation register and is displayed thereon. The worry that the adverse influence arises in the video characteristics of the liquid crystal panel when the black screen is inserted into the display screen is eliminated.
