PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To monitor the accumulation of soot in a diesel engine lubricant by real-time work. SOLUTION: An electric probe 12 has a pair of electrodes 11, 13 which is dipped into lubricant in the oil well of an engine. A relatively low-voltage AC, where the frequency changes, is applied to the electrode of the electric probe, and current and a phase angle are measured over the frequency range at a selected interval. Then, resistance (Z') and reactance (Z") of impedance are calculated, and a Nyquist diagram for indicating the relationship between the resistance of impedance and reactance is drawn.
