PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner capable of facilitating assembling and making compact in size and low in cost, and preventing the moving amount of a plunger after releasing initial set-up from being influenced by functions of the tensioner after releasing the initial set-up of the tensioner. SOLUTION: The chain tensioner comprises a housing 1, the plunger 3 giving an elastic force in front of the housing 1 by means of a compressed coil spring 4, a plurality of engaging grooves 23a to 23f formed on the plunger 3, a register ring 6 having elasticity to a compressed diameter direction and capable of engaging with the engaging grooves 23a to 23f, and an operating groove 10 having a first stopper face 11 limiting the retreat of the plunger 3 by means of engagement with the register ring 6 and a second stopper face 12 limiting a projection of the register ring 6 in the front position of the first stopper face 11. In the chain tensioner, a first set groove 15 is disposed in a position in front of the operating groove 10 of the housing 1, a second set groove 26 is disposed in the position in front of the engaging grooves 23a to 23f of the plunger 3, and the register ring 6 is locked between the first set groove 15 and the second set groove 26 when they are initially set.
