PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which can be miniaturized without using a means to thin a cover constituting a starting circuit unit. SOLUTION: A through hole which is larger than the shape of the rear end part of a transformer vessel 1 is formed in a rear cover 2 constituting a part of the outer wall of the starting circuit unit. The transformer vessel 1 constitutes a transformer part by storing a transformer 4 in it. When assembling the transformer part, it is assembled so that the rear end part of the transformer vessel 1 projects from the through hole.
