Apparatus for sequentially applying labels withdrawn from a supply consisting of a strip of label material laminated with a carrier is arranged on a single actuation of the apparatus to operate in distinct stages to (1) withdraw a length of label material from the supply and feed it towards an applying position and (2) apply a label. The apparatus described is for manual operation using the pressure of one hand only but mechanical operation is also contemplated. When a housing 1 is directed towards a surface 79 a roller 10 makes contact with the surface and continued movement of the housing results in pivoting of a lever 8 and rotation of rollers 30, 31 by interaction of rack teeth 29 with teeth associated with the roller 30. Rotation of the rollers 30, 31 discharges a length of carrier strip 46 and withdraws laminar strip from a spool 44. The carrier strip is drawn over an edge 48 where it is peeled from the label material which extends in the direction of arrow 81. Further movement of the housing 1 towards the surface 29 continues the pivoting of lever 8 to disengage the rack teeth 29 from the roller teeth and discontinues discharge of the strip. Release of the lever 8 from its strip discharging function results in a sudden increase in its angular speed for the second stage of the operation in which a printing stamp 60 is applied to a portion of label material while a preceding portion is severed by a blade 51 and applied to the surface 79 by a rotary pressure pad 57. The length of the labels is adjustable. The printing stamp includes an ink pad 63 and coaxial rings formed with type for indicating, e.g. monetary values. Other forms of pressure pad and severing blades are described. |
