Apparatus for arc spot welding comprises a device for feeding a consumable electrode to the work and a timing circuit which is controlled by a fast acting switch so that time lost during interruptions of the welding current is compensated for. As shown in Fig. 1, a motor 9 may be energized from A.C. terminals 14, 15 to drive an electrode 1 towards work 4, 5, and welding current is supplied from a source 19 having a three-phase input BST. The timing circuit consists principally of a variable resistor 30 and a capacitor 26. In operation, a manual switch 24 is first closed so that relays C, 21. A and E are successively energized. Relay 21 starts the flow of gas to a shield 6; relay A starts the drive motor 9; and relay E switches on the power source 19. A selector switch 25 has previously been set to a position P; the other position, K, being for continuous welding. When the electrode 1 contacts the work, current flows and a fast relay B closes its contacts and the capacitor 26 begins to charge through resistor 30. After a preset time, this charge will be sufficient to break down a unijunction transistor 33, when the capacitor will discharge and a pulse will trigger a thyristor 38. Current now flows in a relay D which breaks the circuit through relays A and C, so terminating the weld provided the starting switch 24 is released. If the arc extinguishes during welding, the fast relay B will be de-energized and the charging of capacitor 26 will be temporarily halted until the arc is restored, so that the welding time is appropriately prolonged. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a transistor is added to the timing circuit in such a way that the charging of the capacitor is also halted if the arc is shortcircuited so that the voltage between the electrode and the work falls below a certain level.</p> |
