<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical compensation film characterized in that; (1) the retardation value Rth in the thickness direction is easily increased and controlled; (2) there is no limitation of the angle when the film is installed in a liquid crystal display; (3) the film causes no luminance irregularity or color irregularity when observed in the front and oblique directions; (4) the film causes no luminance irregularity of color irregularity when observed in the front and inclined directions for long-term use; and (5) the film causes no decrease in the quality for long-term use, compared to conventional films. <P>SOLUTION: The optical compensation film is obtained by biaxially orienting a source web film in the longitudinal direction and the transverse direction with 1.3 stretching magnitude in both directions, the source web film consisting of a thermoplastic norbornene resin, having ≤0.1 wt.% volatile component and ≤0.05 wt.% saturation water absorption, and having a straight die line in the longitudinal direction with <50 nm depth and height and ≥500 nm width. The in-plane retardation value Re of the film satisfies formula [1]: 0≤Re≤200 and the retardation value Rth in the thickness direction satisfies formula [2]: 100≤Rth≤500. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
