[Also in Division F4] In a gas turbine plant having a compressor, combustion chamber and turbine, fuel and air are supplied to the combustion chamber in substantially stoichiometric proportions and water preheated in a compressor inter-cooler is also injected into the chamber to such extent that any corrosive products contained in the combustion gases are cooled below their fusion points. The plant, Fig.1 (not shown), is substantially the same as that described in Specification 1, 212, 511 and includes a main combustion chamber (1) and an optional reheat combustion chamber (17). The main combustion chamber has a vertically mounted outer casing 20 containing a lining 22 defining a combustion zone A and a quenching zone B. An injection assembly 21 supplies residual fuel oil to the combustion zone through an inlet 2 and air from the plant compressors through coaxial inlets 3a, 3b, the proportion of air only slightly exceeding the stoichiometric value. An igniter 23 effects ignition. Water preheated in compressor inter-coolers is injected into the combustion products in zone B through holes 24a in curved pipes 24 to cool the products below the solidification temperature of corrosive impurities (e.g. V 2 O 5 , NaSi) contained therein. In so doing the water evaporates into super-heated steam. Water also enters the combustion zone through tangential nozzles 28 from a space 27a surrounding the lining 22, this water swirling in a helical path along the inner surface of the lining 22 to pick up the solidified impurities and carry them into a region 40 at the bottom of the casing 20. From the region 40 the water and impurities can be drawn off through an outlet 41 or returned via outlets 42 and toroidal header 43 to the space 27a. The gas/steam mixture flows through the outlet 26 of the combustion chamber to the high-pressure turbine (5) of the plant and thence through the reheat chamber (17) to a lower pressure turbine (9). Further water may be injected into the reheat chamber. The pressure ratio of the plant is such that the inlet temperature of the turbine (5) is around 600‹ C. and the temperature of the working fluid does not fall below the dewpoint of sulphur compounds (e.g. sulphur trioxide) in passing through the turbine and its immediate exhaust system.
