<p>1,155,991. Harvesting machines. MASSEY-FERGUSON (AUSTRALIA) Ltd. 7 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 25870/66. Heading A1F. A top cutting device adapted to be mounted at an upper forward location on a machine for harvesting tall crops, e.g. a sugar cane harvester, comprises upper and lower gathering arms 11, 12 diverging forwardly from a narrow throat within which is located a rotary cutter 21, each arm being mounted on a substantially vertical pivot axis 31 or 14 and being connected to means for pivoting the arms about their axes so that the positions of the arms can be interchanged whereby arm 11 is always adjacent uncut crop. The arms 11, 12 carry endless chains 15, 16 fitted with cropengaging fingers and driven by a reversible hydraulic motor 22 so that the inner runs of the chains always move towards the throat. The motor 22 also drives the rotary cutter 21 and a rotary flinger 34 adapted to throw tops cut by the cutter to one side of the device. The arms 11, 12 are connected to a common linkage operable by a ram 46 to effect simultaneous pivoting of both arms. A deflector plate 35 is provided to guide cut tops to one side of the device and comprises a number of hinged parts 36-38. The deflector plate is moved from one side of the device to the other when the arms are interchanged by means of a lever system.
