1,216,607. Magnetic structures. TH. GOLDSCHMIDT A.G. 5 June, 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 26844/68. Heading H1H. [Also in Division C7] A permanent magnet which comprises as its magnetically active constituent an alloy consisting, apart from any impurities, of 10-25 atomic per cent of one or more of Y, Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, and 75-90 atomic per cent of Co, is made by bonding particles of the alloy together while subjected to a magnetic field. Bonding may be effected by sintering; pressure with or without an inorganic binder such as boron nitride or aluminium; or the use of a settable organic binder such as epoxy resin, urea-, phenol- or melamine-formaldehyde resin, acrylic ester resin, polyvinyl alcohol or methyl methacrylate. The examples relate to YCo 5 ; 71À7% Co, 28À3% Y-rich mischmetal; (Ce-rich mischmetal) Co 5 ; and SrnCo 5 . Many uses are given for the resulting magnets.
