<p>The invention provides an apparatus for reducing head impact in sudden impact events in an aircraft. A panel (28) is detachably fastened to the rear surface of a seat back (22) so that the seat back will break free of the panel and be thrown forward while the panel will remain in position. The panel is preferably made of a low mass material to absorb momentum of the head. The panel can be fashioned as a "dummy" seat back, detachably fastened to a seat back by hook and loop fasteners.
