A zone 8 in a room, e.g. an operating theatre, is separated from the remainder of the room by an air curtain and air is supplied to said zone. As shown an air supply slot 7 is arranged in a closed figure, e.g. a circle or rectangle, in the ceiling of the room and exhaust valves 16 are provided near the floor to establish the air curtain. Air is supplied to the zone 8 through apertures in that part 12 of the ceiling within the closed figure. The air flow direction in the curtain may be reversed. The slot 7 may be formed in pivotally adjustable guide members (Fig. 3, not shown).
