To form a joint between two plastics pipes, the leading end of the second pipe is inserted into the trailing end of the first pipe. Each of the pipe ends has a coupling zone. The trailing end of the first pipe and a shoulder at the side of the second pipe coupling towards the pipe are heated to the melting point by a heater, and pushed together into their end positions. The ratchets lock into place and the molten pipe ends fuse together. To form a joint between two plastics pipes (10,20), the leading end (21) of the second pipe is inserted into the trailing end (12) of the first pipe. Each of the pipe ends has a coupling zone (13,23) with corresponding sawtooth ratchet lock structures (14,24) to hold the ends together in a positive fit. The trailing end of the first pipe and a shoulder (25) at the side of the second pipe coupling towards the pipe are heated to the melting point by a heater (50), and pushed together into their end positions. The ratchets lock into place and the molten pipe ends fuse together. |
