The invention comprises basic water-soluble monoazo dyestuffs free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups having the general formula wherein Y is H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, trifluoromethyl, nitro, alkylsulphone, arylsulphone, CN or a carboxylic acid ester group, a sulphonic acid amide or carboxylic acid amide group which may be substituted, or an acyl group; Z is H or a non-water solubilizing substituent, R 4 is H, alkyl or aryl which may be substituted, cycloalkyl or aralkyl, R 5 is H, alkyl which may be substituted, cycloalkyl or aralkyl, and R 4 and R 5 may represent a heterocycle with the N atom, A is a phenylene or naphthylene radical which may be substituted, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are optionally substituted C 1 -C 4 alkyl radicals and X1-1 is an anion. They are prepared by diazotization and coupling or by quaternating the corresponding amino monoazodyestuffs. The quaternating agent may be used in excess or in presence of an inert solvent. The dyes give yellow and orange shades on tanined natural or regenerated cellulose, synthetic polyamides, acid modified polyesters polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene cyanide, silk and leather.
