<p>Phenazine-di-N-oxide-phosphonium betaines, useful as plant protective intermediates and in production of anti-bacterial pharmaceuticals, have formula (I):- (where R1 and R2 are H, alkyl or alkoxy or halogen; R3 is (cyclo)aliphatic or aryl group and R4 and R5 are H or together form a fused benzene ring). They are prepd. by reacting benzofuroxanes (II) with (1) a quinone and a tertiary phosphine P(R3)3 or (2) with a quinone and tertiary phosphine adduct, in a diluent at 0-100 degrees C.</p> |
