In a process to reduce the quantity of foam, bulking or floating sludge in effluent water, sewage sludge or methane biogas generators, the fluid passes through a passage (2, 4) in which it is subjected to vigorous shear forces. The forces reduce the ratio of filament micro-organisms to flocculant-forming micro-organisms. The shear forces are generated by turbulent flow arising in a constriction (3) which accelerates the flow speed, generating cavitation within the water. The constriction is a venturi tube which is adjustable for length and cross sectional area at its narrowest point. The Reynolds number of the fluid under treatment e.g. activated sludge is pref. at least 500,000. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly in which water is pumped through the passage (2, 3, 4).
|
