Gas containing N2 and H2 is produced by cracking gaseous hydrocarbons, boiling up to 180 degrees C, with steam on Ni catalyst at elevated pressure and 800-900 degrees C in indirectly heated tubular furnace, converting CO in cracked gas with steam to CO2 and H2 and scrubbing CO2 from gas, giving crude H2, which is scrubbed wtih compressed and cooled N2 recovered from flue gas by scrubbing out CO2, and adjusted to N2 content required for NH3 synthesis. Flue gas from furnace and/or steam generator provides sufficient N2, contg. only small amounts of O2 and Ar. No free O2 is required in cracking process, hence the air fractionating plant is eliminated and no by-product O2 is formed, so that plant and operating costs are reduced.
|
