PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dicarbonyl compound and its metal complex and a luminescent material and a light-emitting element using the same. SOLUTION: The dicarbonyl compound is represented by general formula (I) [wherein, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>may mutually be each the same or different and denote each a phenylene group represented by general formula (i) (wherein, R<SP>4</SP>denotes an amino group, an alkoxy group or a phenyl group) or a naphthyl group, an anthryl group, a phenanthryl group, a thienyl group, a furyl group or a pyrrolyl group in which a part of hydrogens may be substituted; and R<SP>3</SP>denotes a hydrogen or a≤20C alkyl group].
