The fingerprint sensor is provided by a semiconductor element with a substrate (1) incorporating sensor elements (3) for optical image detection, at a fixed distance from a bearing surface (8) contacted by the finger, together with one or more circuit components (2) for a control and/or evaluation circuit. An optical layer (5) between the sensor elements and the bearing surface acts as a light conductor for illumination of the sensor elements and incorporates light channel structures (6), which can be provided by elements of an electrostatic discharge protection structure.
