The insert and enveloping unit inserts items into envelopes (2) which are then closed by folding over the flap (12). For this a flap pressing device (16) is connected in parallel to the conveyor device (4) and behind the guide devices (13) so that the contact pressure areas engaging on the flap in the conveyor direction from a certain angular position which the flap has at the end of the guide device occupy an angle which becomes increasingly smaller towards the parallel position relative to the wrapping table (1). The contact pressure areas which can be formed by contact pressure rollers are driven synchronously with the conveyor speed of the conveyor device.
