Method for determining the charge state of rechargeable batteries in which a current pulse (310) with a known discharging amplitude and duration is applied to a battery whose charge state is to be determined. During a time interval after the pulse, the battery current is controlled until it reaches a value that is smaller than its maximum no-load current. A no load voltage is measured at least once during a measurement time interval. The measured voltage is measure of the battery charge state. An independent claim is made for an arrangement for determining the charge state of a rechargeable battery.
