<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the character reproducibility and the gradation reproducibility of an output image, based on image data after a filter process. <P>SOLUTION: A filter processor 34 replaces image data of pixels belonging to character regions with zero in a smoothing filter process for image data of pixels belonging to dot regions, if the pixels belonging to character regions are contained in reference pixels.
