<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern forming method for forming a fine and sharp pattern which can be widely applied by an easy method, to provide an image forming method employing the above method, and to provide a pattern forming material and a planographic printing plate. <P>SOLUTION: The pattern forming method includes: a process of disposing a polymerization initiating layer obtained by fixing a polymer having crosslinking groups and functional groups having polymerization initiating ability at the side chains by crosslinking reaction on a supporting body; and a process of generating a graft polymer on the surface of the polymerization initiating layer by graft polymerization by bringing a compound having a polymerizable group into contact with the polymerization initiating layer and by imagewisely adding energy so as to form a pattern comprising a polymer generated region and non-generated region.
