<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation film having excellent optical characteristics, and to provide a retardation film which is easily manufactured, has excellent transparency, heat resistance, mechanical characteristics, and uniform retardation and a method for manufacturing the film. <P>SOLUTION: The optical retardation film comprises a polymer, and the polymer is a saponified cyclic olefin polymer obtained by saponifying a modified cyclic olefin polymer prepared by modifying a cyclic olefin polymer with an acetate-containing compound. The method for manufacturing the retardation film includes a process of stretching a film comprising a polymer.
