<p>A portable device (10) for attachment to a lift system consists of a de driven motor and gearbox (11) onto which is mounted a shaft (12) supporting a tape spool (13), a speed governor (14) and one or more load cells (15). The tape drum (13 drives a tape (16) in or out depending on the rotation of the motor (11).The device (10) is attached to a lift system for example an overhead hoist (31) or mobile hoist (40), the device (10) initially lifts the user and measures their weight, the load to be taken by the user is input via a hand set (22) to a controller (20). The user is then allowed to walk supported in part by the device (10). Any small deviations in the load taken up are allowed by the controller (20) but if any large deviations are detected (ie stumbling/falling), then the device 10 takes up the whole weight of the user.
