PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of a belt continuously variable transmission in which variation in the oil quantity retained in a hydraulic chamber can be suppressed when controlling the retention of the oil in the hydraulic chamber. SOLUTION: The controller of the belt continuously variable transmission comprises a belt wound around a plurality of pulleys, the hydraulic chamber for controlling the winding condition of the belt, a hydraulic passage communicating with the hydraulic chamber, and a valve for controlling the opening of the hydraulic passage, and shuts the hydraulic passage to enable the containment control for maintaining the wound condition of the belt in the predetermined condition. When performing the locking control, the controller has a valve control means (steps S1, S2, and S3) for controlling the valve based on the condition influencing the oil quantity retained in the hydraulic chamber by shutting the oil passage.
