PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder capable of correcting positional shift of recording in the direction perpendicular to the carrying direction of a recording medium between a plurality of recording heads. SOLUTION: An alignment pattern D is recorded on a recording sheet P using a recording head 10Y on the most upstream side in the recording sheet carrying direction of an ink jet recorder for forming a color image using a plurality of recording heads. The alignment pattern is read out by a reading means 14, e.g. an imaging element, provided in other recording head 10M and a shift in the main scanning direction is calculated between each recording head 10M and the recording head 10Y on the most upstream side in the recording sheet carrying direction based on the alignment pattern thus read out. Positional shift of recording is corrected by moving the recording head 10M, altering a nozzle being used for recording, or altering image data being assigned to a nozzle based on a shift thus calculated.
