1,223,127. Gas depolarized cell. ENERGY CONVERSION Ltd. 31 Oct., 1968 [2 Nov., 1967], No. 49955/67. Heading H1B. A support member for a cathode of a gasdepolarized cell in a battery comprises an intercell separator member with a mount for a cathode in a recess on one side, and on the other side a plurality of spaced projections 3 are so arranged as to co-operate with those of the next cell when assembled in a battery, thus enabling fluid to circulate to the respective cathodes of adjacent cells. The member may be formed by injection moulding in polystyrene or in acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer as a frame with a number of parallel strips which are at 45 degrees to the surrounding frame sides, which strips bear the projections 3. A bicathode member, Fig. 4, may be formed by arranging two support members face to face with the projections contacting outwardly and the cathode bearing faces being spaced to receive anode 14, e.g. of porous zinc. These bi-cells which may be air depolarized can be assembled to form a battery. A separator paper in which electrolyte is held is applied to each side of the anode before assembly. The cathode may be made by coating, rolling or spraying one surface of a porous film of hydrophobic polymer material such as p.t.f.e. with a dispersion of p.t.f.e. and Pt black, or carbon or graphite may be used as catalyst with or without silver. |
