A sample is taken (3) from oil in use, or from its vapor. Vapor from the oil is supplied to an ion mobility spectrometer (5). The sample is analyzed in the vapor phase, to determine substances present in the oil in use. Unused oil is analyzed similarly. Comparison of results, in terms of nature and composition, gives a measure of aging or deterioration of the oil in use. An independent claim is included for corresponding equipment. |
