PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup device which allows pixel signals to be accurately read out from arbitrary areas for a long time. SOLUTION: Shift registers constituting at least one of horizontal and vertical scanning circuits of an XY address type solid-state image pickup device are constituted of shift register units 1 connected in series in many stages to transmit information related to a scan position by a clock and a storage part 4 connected to each shift register unit through a switch 2 for storage and a switch 3 for transfer. Scan start position information is stored in the storage part in a scan start position setting period preceding main scanning, and scan start position information is transferred from the storage part at the time of main scanning to start scanning from a desired scan start position, and the operation to storing scan start position information is performed also in main scanning.
