Programmable time switch has slot for receiving program carrier card having matrix of code elements

The time switch has a microprocessor (CPU) with an electrically rewritable non-volatile memory (EEM) for storing at least one switching program. A multi-track reading device (LV) is arranged in a guide slot (FS) for a card-shaped program carrier (PT) which is provided with a matrix of yes-no code elements (CE) arranged in rows and columns. A scan routine reads the code elements when the program carrier is inserted into the slot, and reads a switching program into the non-volatile memory accordingly.
