<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and program for automatically carrying out adjustment of the density of an image, in the image processing apparatus or the like for automatically carrying out the density adjustment of the image. <P>SOLUTION: A CPU 10 calculates the histogram of images read from an image read means 40, and detects a shadow part and stores it to a shadow part storage area 306. Further, the CPU 10 detects a highlight part and stores it to a highlight part storage area 308.
