Cable length sensor has a housing (12) containing a cable drum on which an extendable measurement cable (50) is wound. Means are providing for attaching a measurement indicator to the housing. The measurement indicator has a shaft that projects into the cable drum and is held by flush-mounted axle stumps which hold the shaft, while providing it with a degree of play. Means (56, 58) are provided for bearing the cable drum on the measurement indicator shaft.
