Method for parameterizing field units for process automation that are equipped with a controller and communicate using the HART protocol, whereby a partial character sequence is extracted from a character sequence input using an operating unit according to the HART specification. The partial character sequence is interpreted character by character and the parameters to be set are determined and set from the partial character sequence. An independent claim is made for a field unit operating using the HART protocol, said unit having a controller with routines for analysis of character sequences and routines for converting the sequences into numbers.
