PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder with less constraint in installation posture in spite of having a compact and simple structure, capable of surely feeding a paper sheet even when edges of a plurality of the paper sheets are somewhat irregular in alignment. SOLUTION: The paper feeder M is provided with a paper insertion part 11 accepting and holding a plurality of checks S, a paper feeding roller 20 formed in a fan shape having a circular arc part 23 and a chord part 24 and driven to rotate, a pressing member 30 elastically energizing the check S to an outer peripheral surface of the paper feeding roller 20, a pressing member control mechanism 37 displacing the pressing member 30 to a position away from the paper feeding roller 20 when the chord part 24 faces the pressing member 30, a friction separation pad 40 allowed to freely rotate so as to change a contact angle to the edge of the check S, having a rotating end being elastically energized in a rear end direction of the paper sheet, and a pad control mechanism 47 displacing a friction separation pad 40 to the position for positioning the edge of the check S when the chord part 24 faces the pressing member 30.
