PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving hearth rolls in a continuous annealing furnace with which in the case of applying the annealing or the other heat treatment under high temperature condition, for example, with a horizontal continuous annealing furnace, the bending of the cast iron-made hearth roll under high temperature condition is prevented and smooth operation can be performed by preventing the deformation and the wearing of the hearth roll and also, the durability of the facility is remarkably improved. SOLUTION: In the method for driving the hearth rolls for carrying a steel strip set in the continuous annealing furnace for continuously applying the heat treatment by carrying the steel strip, in the case of stopping the steel strip, the tension loaded on the steel strip is lowered and also, the above hearth rolls are driven so as to be stopped, normally rotated, stopped and reversely rotated in this order.
