PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of evaluating the aerodynamic characteristics of a golf ball with dimples on its surface by sampling a single dimple. SOLUTION: The dimple effect is evaluated with the intensity of a vertical whirl having a main axis of whirling in the same direction as the direction of air currents among whirls generated from dimples on the surface of the golf ball as a reference for enhancing the flying characteristics by reducing the air resistance against the golf ball. More specifically, it is determined that the intensity of the vertical whirl is larger and the air resistance is smaller as the difference between the maximum and the minimum velocities in sampled velocities in a direction Y is larger when the distribution in a direction X of the flow velocities of gas flowing over the dimples of the golf ball in the direction Y is sampled, on condition that the direction of flow of the gas flowing around the golf ball is the direction Y and the direction perpendicular to the normal direction of positions of dimples and to the direction of flow of the gas is the direction X.
