The traffic safety system (20) for a road vehicle may automatically sound the horn (14) and flash the headlights (11) and the sidelights (10) if a hazardous situation is sensed. The system has an array of sensors (21-23) at the front, sides and rear of vehicle to detect close approach of a car or a pedestrian. The sensors may be ultrasonic radar or IR sensors and may incorporate proximity sensors. The sensors are connected to an electronic control circuit (24) containing a microprocessor or microcontroller (25) incorporating an algorithm circuit (26).
